We are proud to announce the 2019 Positive Youth Leadership Summit. The Positive Youth Leadership Summit has historically catered to individuals within the state of Ohio. In 2017, however, PYLS began preparing and empowering young people living with HIV from across the Midwest.
Equitas Health understands that young adults living with HIV face a unique combination of issues related to their age and HIV status. One of the goals for the summit is to prepare and empower HIV positive young people from across the Midwest to advocate for themselves and their communities by teaching them various skills.
Most HIV-related efforts targeting young adults focus on education and screening, discounting those who already have a positive HIV diagnosis. Medical care alone does not address integral familial, social, community, and personal issues. Social support, access to treatment, and developmental issues are complicated by HIV transmission route (perinatal or behavioral), time since diagnosis, family medical and social histories, geographic location, age and other social determinants.
At the 13th annual Positive Youth Leadership Summit young people living with HIV from across the Midwest will learn or expand the skills they need to advocate for themselves and for their communities.
The Positive Youth Leadership Summit is free for young people living with HIV. We are accepting applications now through April 5. Participation includes all meals for the three days of the Summit and two nights at the Marriott Columbus University Area (Friday, April 26 and Saturday, April 27). Equitas Health will also pay for travel expenses for accepted participants who need assistance.
